What is social security in Belgium?

In Belgium, healthcare is covered by social security. When you fall ill, see a doctor or dentist, are admitted to hospital or buy medicines in a pharmacy, part of the cost is covered by the State. And if you have to stop working because of illness, accident or pregnancy, you will receive a replacement income. The amount of these reimbursements or replacement income is set by the INAMI (National Institute for Sickness and Invalidity insurance).

What is a health insurance organization in Belgium?

Anyone living and/or working in Belgium can benefit from social security as long as they are registered with a mutual insurance company. "La mutuelle" also known as "la mutualité" is a private organization funded by the state to reimburse the healthcare and the replacement income in the event of incapacity for work.

Why should you join a health insurance organization?

Unlike in some other countries, your registration with a Belgian health insurance provider is not automatic ; it is up to you to take the necessary steps to register. It is only once you are enrolled with such organization that you can receive reimbursements for your healthcare expenses or replacement income in the event of incapacity for work.
